A Member of the GOP Who Impressed Me
Ever since Trump was elected in 2016, I have been wondering why a majority of the GOP party remain members of his cult. It still has not taken an insurrection and a clear obstruction of justice to detox the GOP of Trump’s stench.
However, back in 2018, I was in email correspondence with Maryland State Delegate, Christopher West, who represented the district where I once lived. I had since relocated to California and his office thought I was one of his constituents and they sent me a campaign solicitation email.
I responded that I no longer support any member of the GOP since they are feckless and flaccid in their dealings with Trump and have allowed him to run amok.
Chris West’s reply was as follows (Baltimoreans, you have a very reasoned member of the GOP representing you):
"Debbie, you sound like my wife, who greets me every afternoon when I get home with “Guess what he’s done now?” I know that the pronoun “he” doesn’t refer to our son! All I can say is that over the course of the past four years, I have kept my nose to the grindstone and done my level best to pass legislation that will improve life here in Maryland.
As I am not in Congress (you couldn’t pay me to be in Congress!), I have had no opportunity to deal with the President and his antics. Actually, I have worked in the General Assembly to ameliorate some of the detrimental impact of the President’s policies on the citizens of Maryland. For example, I was the only Republican on the Maryland Health Insurance Coverage Protection Commission, which successfully developed a way to stop the detrimental impact of the President’s policies on the individual healthcare market (Obamacare). When the Governor signed the bill, with the Speaker and the Senate President at his side, he announced that in his view, this bill was the most important achievement of the 2018 General Assembly session because everyone worked together in a bipartisan way to solve the problem.
So my message to you is that here in Maryland, bipartisanship is working. Maryland is setting an example which the federal government would do well to follow. Best. Chris”
Christopher R. West, Maryland State Senator (R-42)
